6. INTERNATIONAL FLUTE
FESTIVAL
FLUTEMEETING 2008: report
22/08/08 22:14 Filed in: Work
The organizer of this event was the Flute Art Cultural Society and it took place under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and County, in collaboration with Charta Cultural Association and Music Conservatory from Larissa. The responsible person this year was Katrin Zens, the flute teacher at the Music Academy in Salonica.
International exchange of flute teachers, concerts and workshops during the festival with different topics and for the purpose of improving knowledge on the flute playing, as well as the exchange of teaching achievements in the field of interpretation, flute playing techniques – were the assigned topics at this festival.
Lectures and workshops were taking place during daytime. Ten a different participating country representatives gave a concert every evening.
The festival participants were the flutists and teachers and their students from France, Greece, New Zealand, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Slovenia and Croatia.
One of the ideas of Flutemeeting 2008 was forming of a group of flutists at random from completely different environments and from all participating countries. During three festival days these groups spent time together working with guest professors, preparing compositions for the closing gala concert of the participants, in pleasant work atmosphere of the Conservatory in Larissa. During these preparations each professor had an opportunity to present his/her method of work, the speed and skill of the preparation in such a short time with flutists of different level of knowledge and ability, which called for an accurate estimate as well as fast and effective solving of problems regarding intonation, tone, technical and style.
The topics of the workshops were the following: First encounter with the flute and how to fall in love with the flute at first sight. The art of rehearsing, interpretation, contemporary music, ways of everyday warming-up, ascending force being created at breathing out, technically demanding places – how to easily and efficiently solve them, interpretation of baroque music, creation of a new ensemble and how to search for adequate repertory, labyrinth – making of accidental sound -landscapes.
Presented were a large number of chamber music pieces for the flute as well as first performances-pieces commissioned especially for this festival.
Special delicacy for the flutists were video projections of very rare films with lectures by James Galway, Peter-Lukas Graf and by Marcel Moyse who we consider the father of modern flute-playing technique and interpretation. For this reason these projections were very interesting and well attended.
The concert of Croatian representatives took place on the second day of the festival. A flute teacher, Marina Novak, headed the team. After an introductory lecture on the Music Academy of Zagreb, Croatian composers and their works for the flute, she led us through the program in which the Music Academy of Zagreb flute students presented themselves: Maja Šišeta, Ilijana Korać, Lucija Zovko, Ana Batinica, Andrea Jelavić, Vanja Markesina, Dora Weiss and Jelena Geček.
The versatile, well rehearsed and coordinated flute ensemble left an extraordinary impression on the audience. The Zagreb ensemble presented chamber music for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 flutes, promoting in a very successful manner our Croatian heritage and Croatia through elements of folklore and works by F. Lhotka, I. Kuljeric, B. Magdic, as well as by younger generation of composers: F. Djurovic, V. Lisjak and M. Rabadan.
The topic of my lecture was Interpretation of baroque music, which I gave
the last day of the festival, on 2nd of April. My idea was to explain the very essence and the thought that will lead flutists when performing baroque music, including the way of thinking to be followed, as well as giving the sense of freedom, safety and relaxation in the interpretation of the 17th and 18th century music for which there are no recordings. Musicians are left to try to reconstruct from written scores the manner in which it used to be performed.
All concerts and lectures were well attended. The media have also followed the whole project in a good way. I can really say that the 6th International Flutemeeting 2008 achieved its goal and was a great success.
I am also glad to say that Croatia again actively and successfully participated in another international project. Therefore, I would like to wholeheartedly thank, on behalf of the representatives of Croatia and my own, for the confidence given to us, as well as for the financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and from the City of Zagreb Office for Culture.
